These respond to indications that coronavirus is less likely to spread outdoors. Soon, some local restaurants will be able to serve patrons :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>on sidewalks <\/li><li>in parking lots or closed streets<\/li><li>in on-street parklets. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transitioning a Restaurant to Outdoor Dining<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outdoor dining isn&#8217;t for every restaurant. Depending on your cuisine,  location, formality and clientele, you may choose not to serve al fresco. If you do, here are some things to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Check city rules and resources<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandmaine.gov\/2630\/Restaurant-Retail-Reopening-Assistance-F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southportland.org\/files\/4815\/9119\/6246\/Ordinance_21_-_Ch_33_as_amended_at_1st_reading_highlighted_to_show_changes_06-02-20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Portland<\/a> city web sites have the ordinances and applications for permits and street closures. <\/li><li><strong>Up your cleaning game<\/strong>. During the COVID threat, you&#8217;re already doing extra cleaning and disinfecting. Outside adds new cleaning challenges: pollen, dust, litter and even insects.<\/li><li><strong>Keep it light &#8211; and smooth<\/strong>. Make sure there&#8217;s enough light for employees and customers to see well. Paint or tape the edge of irregular surface levels. Avoid loose cords and other trip hazards. <\/li><li><strong>Watch the skies. <\/strong>That includes the sun. Plan your seating to avoid excessive sun exposure during meal service, if possible. Summer thunderstorms can develop fast. Have a plan to quickly evacuate your dining area and secure umbrellas and other furniture. That will help avoid injury and damage.<\/li><li><strong>Beware of vehicles. <\/strong>Create barriers between diners and vehicles &#8211; including bikes and scooters that might be on sidewalks.  <\/li><li><strong>Watch outdoor flames.<\/strong> Keep propane heaters, cooking equipment and other heat sources away from flammables like fabrics and awnings.<\/li><li><strong>Check your insurance<\/strong>. Many liquor liability policies only cover you &#8220;on premises.&#8221; Does that extend to a parking lot or street? The same with property insurance for your outdoor seating and fixtures.
