These maps are used to determine insurance costs in the <a title=\"NFIP web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.floodsmart.gov\/floodsmart\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)<\/a>, the only flood insurance available for most properties. <a title=\"Business Property Insurance from Noyes Hall &amp; Allen Insurance South Portland Maine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noyeshallallen.com\/business-insurance\/business-property-insurance-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maine business property insurance<\/a>,\u00a0 <a title=\"Maine Home Insurance and Homeowners Insurance Quotes from Noyes Hall &amp; Allen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noyeshallallen.com\/personal-insurance-landing\/homeowners-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\">homeowners insurance<\/a> and <a title=\"Condominium INsurance and Maine Condominium Insurance Quotes from Noyes Hall &amp; Allen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noyeshallallen.com\/personal-insurance-landing\/condo-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\">condo insurance<\/a>\u00a0do NOT cover flood damage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0;\">FEMA proposes to change the zoning of much waterfront property in South Portland, Portland and Cape Elizabeth. The cities of Portland and South Portland are challenging the new zoning, but there&#8217;s no guarantee that they will be successful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"min-height: 14px; font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0;\">\n<p style=\"font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Helvetica;\">The Zone Differences<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0;\">FEMA&#8217;s zone classification system defines an area that has a 1 percent chance of being inundated by flood waters in a given year a &#8220;special hazard area&#8221;. There are two categories of &#8220;special flood hazard areas&#8221;, &#8220;A&#8221; and &#8220;V&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"min-height: 14px; font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0;\">\n<p style=\"font: 12px Helvetica; margin: 0;\">The difference is that &#8220;A&#8221; zones are low-lying areas subject to flooding, while in &#8220;V&#8221; (velocity) zones, the water is more likely to flow with the increased hazard and damage of wave action.
