Between layoffs, furloughs and attrition, reduced payrolls caused U.S. workers&#8217; compensation premiums to drop 11.4% from 2008 to 2009.\u00a0 While a slight reduction in rates caused some of that decrease, most of it was payroll-driven.<br \/>\nNew England\u00a0fared slightly better than average, with a 10.8% decrease. Our state actually did better than New England. <a title=\"Maine Workers Comp Insurance and Workers Compensation Insurance Quotes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noyeshallallen.com\/business-insurance\/workers-compensation-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maine workers compensation insurance<\/a> premiums were 10.2% lower in 2009 than 2008.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1035\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1035\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.noyeshallallen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/WC-premium-change-map1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1035\" title=\"WC premium change map\" src=\"https:\/\/www.noyeshallallen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/WC-premium-change-map1-300x204.gif\" alt=\"Workers Compensation Overall Premium Change, 2008 to 2009\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">click to enlarge map<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Increased Losses<\/strong><br \/>\nThe workers&#8217; compensation loss ratio (losses incurred to premium earned) increased nearly 7% in 2009. Although not uncommon during an economic recession, this is not a positive sign for the health of the workers&#8217; comp insurance market. Relatively good loss ratios are deteriorating, and the uncertainty of national health care reform, medical cost increases, and employment and economic growth (or lack thereof) concern underwriters. The result may be upward pressure on Maine workers&#8217; comp rates over the next few years.
